A Glass of Memories

Its not uncommon to find a person silently weeping while holding a glass of whisky. To the outside eye this may seem very strange, to the people who know whisky, who really know whisky, we can relate…

For some, whisky is just a liquor with the purpose of intoxicating. Meant to be consumed and the after effects enjoyed. Sure, there are some whiskies which were made for this, no harm in that #StayResponsible but if you’re no novice to whisky then you know how much more there is to this magical spirit. There’s a reason, after all, to its reference as liquid gold…

I can’t speak for everyone; the whisky journey is very personal one. For me, it was (initially) about taste. I was mesmerized by how broad the spectrum of flavors are from a somewhat identical process, identical spirit. Not just that, but the change in both texture and flavor from the nose (the smell), the palate (taste) and finish (aftertaste) is truly fascinating.

My journey has pivoted a little since the early days. Yes, taste is still very important, but the true enjoyment lies in the memories. Memories you had completely forgotten, taken for granted, and sometimes, memories which aren’t even real.

It can remind you of places you’ve been, snapshots of your childhood, people of your past (your grandparents, your pets, those that you’ve loved and lost). It truly is amazing.

You see, there’s so much more to whisky than just drinking it. Its an experience. It should be called whisky experiencing rather than whisky tasting. Ok, maybe that’s a little over the top; but you get the point.

So to those weeping away with glass in hand, I understand…
